New Jersey Clean Energy Rebate Programs

New Jersey's statewide clean energy initiative, administered by the NJ Board of Public Utilities, provides financial incentives to help New Jersey residents, businesses and communities reduce their energy use, lower costs and protect the environment. The objective is to transform the energy marketplace in New Jersey toward more energy-efficient and renewable-energy technolgies.

Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs)

New Jersey recently passed a law requiring that all electricity suppliers provide a percentage of their electricity from solar generation. Suppliers have the option to either generate solar power or buy Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs). SRECs represent the renewable attributes of solar generation. One SREC is equivalent to 1000 kilowatt hours of solar electricity produced.

A customer generating solar electricity can sell their SRECs for cash on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis to help buy down the cost of their PV system. They can be sold directly to electricity generators who supply power to entities in the State of New Jersey or to SREC brokers, PowerLight, or anyone that wants to purchase them.
